Many of Lars’ von Trier’s films ‘quote’ or pay reference to other films and filmmakers. The
Dogme Manifesto was intended to counteract “certain tendencies” in conventional cinema – a phrase that in itself quotes Francois Truffaut and the first New Wave of French filmmakers in the 1960s.
The Dogme Manifesto could also be seen as an homage to the KinoEye Manifesto of Dziga Vertov in 1920s Russia and the added ‘von’ in Lars von Trier’s name follows other great film directors from the past - Erich von Stroheim and Josef von Sternberg.
Therefore, just as Dogme has paid tribute to other filmmakers and film movements in history, our ‘Homage Rule’ is an homage within a homage!
Watch any of Lars von Trier’s films to see that to become a good filmmaker you also need to be a good film watcher! So get out there and get inspired!
